max.keevill asked: I’m going on a Philmont Trek w/ my Boy Scout troop this summer. Our trek is about 75 miles in Cimarron, NM. What are the best hiking boots for their price and why?

The best ones are the ones that fit your feet the best. The worst thing you can do is buy a boot that doesn’t fit you right. NEVER buy a boot that someone else recommends. Just because if fits them doesn’t mean it will fit you.
Go to an outdoor retailer and get a proper fit.
Seriously, for this type of thing I would just take a good sturdy pair of running shoes. Hiking boots will just slow you down.
If you plan on hitting Baldy or the Tooth you WILL want a sturdy pair of boots. I agree with honorunit go to an outdoor retailer, not academy or walmart et al. Have the boots fitted with wool liner socks and wool outer socks on. Put both boots on and walk the store a bit. If they have a mock hill walk up and down it feeling of the toes. Look for something gore-tex lined or leather that you can snoseal, also consider some gaiters One of the worst parts of my trek was my pants and boots caked in mud from sawmill canyon. Lastly make sure they are well broken in before you leave, and make sure you carry moleskin on the trail.

Best of luck and after this summer you will truly understand the statement “I made it”
