I need to know what to feed a baby lizard that I caught in Southern Ohio?
replexgirl asked:
This past weekend I was camping in southern Ohio and I caught a baby lizard looking thing (about a inch long) I brought it home and I have it in an aquarium with sand and rocks and branches and a heat and vitamin lamp and water. I am not sure what to feed it? I caught a cricket, but even that seems too big for it. I put a banana in there and it was a little interested in that. Would it eat a ant? I am going to go to the pet store and see if there is anything I can buy to feed it. Any information you can offer would be appreciated. It is kind of brown like a toad, with a long tail and legs and toes and it has a triangular head, and tiny eyes.

Try Romain Lettuce that is what i feed my bearded dragon and my gecko, you can also buy tiny crickets
I used to have lizards & I always feed them crickets or meal worms from pets mart. The crickets are only like 8 cents a piece you could get like 10 of them or 15 n I am sure your baby lizard would go to town. I had fun with them when I was little. Hope this helps.

If you take an animal from the wild and it lives (very small chance), you can’t give it food from the wild or it will almost certainly die (pesticides, herbicides, etc). You also need to keep it on the right bedding. Was it on sand when you caught it? Then why is it on sand now? Your very best best would be to release it back into the wild and BUY a pet from a local pet outlet (petco, petsmart, your local reptile show, etc) and ask questions of the care for your new friend. Search the internet and read everything you can BEFORE bringing the pet home so you provide it with a good, healthy life. Animals in the wild carry many diseases and have short life-expectancy, where the captive animals are usually free of disease and can live a long, happy life if you provide them what they need.
Anyways, to answer you question, feed it FLIGHTLESS FRUIT FLIES, about 3 a day. You can buy them in a little tube from Petco. Make sure they are alive in the tube.
Good luck!
I’ve always had sucess with “meal-worms”. Sold in pet stores, they come in little plastic containers.
Sounds like it could be a ground skink.
Well the best thing to do is see what kind of lizard it is and feed it the kind of food it should be eating and see how it reacts to different types of food and give it the one it likes the most at least thats what I would do
Crickets, Mealworms. Ect.
I think that you have to have a license in the state of Ohio to maintain wildlife (even if it is a lizard) in captivity. Check with the Department of Natural Resources/ Division of Wildlife. If you have a picture, I might be able to tell you what kind it is. Most likely, you will need to return it back to its habitat. If you are interested in owning a lizard, I would suggest one from a reputable pet store. I have attached a link to the ODNR website for your reference that describes the codes for capturing and possessing native reptiles in Ohio.
Try very small crickets and cut up some meal worms or regular earth worms. I know it sounds gross but they will eat maggots to. Since it is so small it needs small bites of food. You might also try moist cat food. Meat flavor only.
